If you're like I am, you want your entire home to look wonderful. This will definitely include one of the most necessary rooms in your home, your bathroom. A lot of people favor a large, relaxing bathroom. After all, it can provide a welcome retreat after a long, hard day. By running a nice, hot bath and adding a few bubbles and scented candles, you've got the greatest way in the world to relax and forget your troubles.
One thing I can't stand is a cluttered, messy room. How about you? I like things neat, so cleaning up a bunch of junk can make a lot of difference in the feeling of a room. I can also see myself relaxing in one of those huge sunken tubs, or how about a skylight with a skylight above and the feeling of showering in a warm spring rain? Color is another important item, and I must say that I prefer the more neutral shades in my bathroom. I couldn't face the shock of overly-bright colors first thing in the morning, because I'm not a morning person by any stretch of the imagination.
My fittings have got to be very contemporary and shiny. None of the Victorian frills for me, thank you! However, I'd still like a few nice plants around. We're just not living in the 1890s any longer. We've come into the 21st century, and the trends are sleek and modern. If you have any lingering ideas about hokey 20th century remnants such as fish, seashells, and the like, you need to take your ideas to the beach and leave them out of your bathroom. Nothing in my bathroom will be ornate or gaudy!
One of the reasons I don't want the ornate look (even if I liked it, that is) is because that stuff is hard to keep clean. I want a bathroom I can clean easily. I want tiled walls, and if I had my preference, I'd want one whole wall filled with nothing but mirror tiles. Having all those mirrors will make the room look much larger and more open and has nothing to do with me wanting to admire myself. Plus, I know that the home decorating shows advocate using stenciled tiles, but that's not on my list. The plainer the better as far as I'm concerned.
Those home makeover shows aren't all bad, though. You can get some really great ideas from them. Just be sure to weed out the ideas that no civilized person would ever want in a bathroom, like walls covered with feathers, and you'll be fine.
I've got to tell you about a program I saw the other day. It was showing a gorgeous apartment that had been completely redone by the trendy young folks who were living there. Most of the space was very attractive and very open, but the bathroom facilities struck me as a little strange. For one, because the couple didn't like walls, their fantastic two-person tub was sitting in the middle of the space where everyone could see it.
In addition, although there was a divider in front of the toilet, it was of clear glass, so everyone could see you there, too. The husband said that they had done that so that when he was conversing with his wife he didn't want to have to stop if his wife felt the call to use the facilities. It seems to me that she could hear through a more opaque wall, too. I suspicion it was the seeing he was interested in more than the hearing, anyway.
As you can see, whatever your style is, you can make it happen. You may not want to go quite as far out in your design as that young couple did, but I'm sure you have your own ideas just as I have mine. You can make them a reality with a little inspiration and thoughts revolving around your own, personal tastes.
